Though it can't be dubbed extra-ordinary, the film at least has its heart in the right place.

There comes a time in our lives when everyone has to take a stand and go ahead with what they believe in. Benoy Mittra's Antaraal is all about the ups and downs in life, making and breaking of relationships, hopes and dilemmas of a few individuals, who incidentally come together for an unborn child, conceived in desire but not really desired.

We see Mrinmoyee (Sayani) — an otherwise bubbly and spirited college girl — who, in a moment of weakness, throws life out of gear. Paranoia, dejection and then the unfamiliar taste of motherhood — Mrinmoyee's character shapes up in utter confusion. She is forced by her dad, a political bigwig, to stay at her doctor Antara Pal Chowdhury's (Debasree Roy) place in fear of being hounded by the media.

Antara, a well-known gynecologist, is ambitious. Success means a lot to her. But at the same time, she is aware of her responsibilities and the nobility of her profession.

As the girl desperately tries to erase the episode from her mind, life demands that she faces reality. At this juncture, we meet yet another interesting character — Sutirtha Pal Chowdhury (Harsh Chhaya), Antara's husband. Once a brilliant student, Sutirtha simply couldn't relate to the so-called rat race of the corporate world and therefore, resigned himself to being a mediocre professional — a loser in the eyes of his wife. But nothing could diminish his passion for theatre. He adores Franz Kafka's works. It is the German author's philosophy that inspires him to write and helps him stay calm amidst the madness around.

So far so good. Performance-wise, the movie has got something to interest. Sayani looks and expresses better as the film progresses. After a long time, Debasree seems to have taken genuine interest both in the plot and her character. Her pairing with Harsh draws attention. The best part about the film, however, is the warm bond of compassion that Mrinmoyee and Sutirtha share. They are sensitive and inspire each other with their thoughts, ideas and approach towards life. Harsh — a popular actor on national TV and in Bollywood — looks his part and delivers a good performance. His endeavour to grasp the Bengali language shows, if one can ignore the obvious accent.

Other actors like Ananya Chatterjee, Kaushik Banerjee, Chandan Sen, Sreela Majumder et al add their bit to the plot. Antaraal is, however, not entirely devoid of glitches. For instance, one wonders why and how a girl can hold her addiction to Farmville (a free online social game) responsible for 'the mistake'. Also, it must have skipped the director's attention to edit portions where a scene, supposedly set in Digha, has evident signs of being shot elsewhere.

While the first half is engaging, the pace slackens in the second half, focusing on issues like genetic disorders, problems that arise during adoption procedures etcetera, etcetera.

Though it can't be dubbed extra-ordinary, the film at least has its heart in the right place.
