Prashanth is a happy-go-lucky youngster who falls for Nandhini, a beautician and the sole earning member of her lower middle class family. They seem to have a fairy tale romance going for them, until one incident ruins their lives as well as the lives of those around them.
Director Jayatheertha, with his previous films, has proven how he is one of the more capable writers today in Kannada films. With Beautiful Manasugalu, he proves the same once again. The film, which is based on a real incident, has a clever narrative, which manages to keep the viewer engaged, especially in the second half, which is crucial for a romantic thriller like this.
The maker has chosen a tale that touches upon two relevant problems faced in the society today - corruption and the breaking news syndrome. While many films have tried to tell the same in vain, Jayatheertha has woven an interesting romantic tale holding a real life incident as inspiration. The film talks about love, romance and aspirations. But, most importantly, through his commercial narrative, Jayatheertha has done his two cents in showcasing how women are often used as commodities in a power game and has succeeded to a great extent mirroring the ill-effects of the same.
The Lucia pair give their all to ensure this tale translates like how the director had envisioned it, or so the audience are made to feel. Sathish Ninasam moves from being goofy and lovable to edgy and despicable in different scenes, playing his part well. Sruthi Hariharan has given one of her better performances till date and owns most of the emotional scenes with her convincing acting. An extra mention must be made for her good dubbing skills. Achyuth Kumar delivers another rock solid performance.
The film, which is set in a surrounding that require it to be rustic, is glossy and good looking, which is pleasing to the eyes. Bharath BJ's tunes linger in one's mind long after the film is done. If you like love stories that are not all candyfloss and have a bit of a reality check, and aren't looking for obvious over-the-top masala, then Beautiful Manasugalu makes for a refreshing watch.
