The corny dialogues, tacky costumes and forgettable songs pull this flick down

Classmate is a perfect example of a buddy film gone wrong. The director, before coming up with this turkey, thought carefully about formulae, checked their success rates and took bits out of many Bollywood films made during the late 80s and 90s.

The story revolves around a group of college kids. All of them have their share of secrets. Avi (Aksat) struggles to reunite his estranged parents and fights his love for Taani (Jhilik), Isha (Sankalita) secretly loves Avi but suffers from insecurity and a dominating mother who wants to marry her off. She rejects the proposal from a guy who looks genuinely in love with her for Avi, who doesn't care two hoots for her. All of their paths cross and after several badly-directed dramatic confrontations and unnecessary song-and-dance routines, you feel like telling Avi and Jhilik to just hurry up and confess their feelings for each other — so that the end credits can roll.

The veteran actors — Anuradha Roy and Bodhisattwa Majumder as Avi's suffering parents, Biswajit Chakraborty as Taani's fun-loving father, Krishnakishore Mukhopadhyay as the love-struck Bengali professor — do their jobs well. Tanima Sen and Kharaj Mukherjee, with their impeccable comic timing, leave the audience in splits. But the college kids, be it Aksat, Jhilik, Sankalita or their friends, are bad casting choices. Throughout the film, they either overact or don't know how to express their emotions. The corny dialogues, tacky costumes and forgettable songs pull this flick down.
