Synopsis: Eight individuals who are short-listed to be CEO of an organisation are left in a room that plays many tricks on them.

Review: There are some young filmmakers for whom the problem is not lack of ambition, but aiming too high. What they do not realise is that their wings aren’t fully formed and are only made of wax and in trying to fly higher and higher, they get burnt and fall spectacularly. Kannan Rangaswamy belongs in this category. In Dhayam, he has a concept that could prove a challenge even for an experienced director, but his lack of experience turns this into a clumsy effort that tests our patience.

The signs are all there right from the moment when we see eight characters walking into a room for an interview. The eight characters, each of whom have distinct personalities, realise that there can be only one ultimate winner and try to be that person by destroying the others. There are twists upon twists, one of which puts this into the psychological thriller territory, but the execution is laughably bad.

Even if you can overlook the amateurishness performances, which would be deemed passable only in a school play, the inept blocking of actors and the staging of the scenes — crucial in a chamber piece like this one — stop the film from finding the tone that such a film needs. This is why by the time we are finally told what’s actually happening, we can only pity the director for failing to realise that he was in over his head when he took up such a complex subject.

Instead of providing 3D glasses for movies, theatres could provide people with guns so that we could kill ourselves after watching movies like Dhayam.
