the main character Akbar is very unhappy. His face is blotted with permanent shades of sadness. Sometimes his looks become sullen like that of a man rooted in despair. It is as though he has been going through a trauma, a series of heartbreaks so bad that he is less a man than a machine. The disinterest and detachment on Akbar's face befit that of a man who has bitterly lost a battle and finds no meaning in his life.
He is a gangster and it is evidently conveyed by the title. His eyes are supposed to glower with a consistency that should match a clock that never stops ticking. However this glower is seldom visible for it is often masked by sun-glasses. As for his garbs, he wears stylish, short, black jackets and variety of jeans. He breaks his perennial melancholy with rare utterances delivered by a studied movement of his lips that never open up beyond a prescribed limit.
Akbar's life story is 'gloriously' reminiscent of a set of nostalgia. Although it comes cluttered, generous hearts would still welcome it. Ahmed Siddique and Abhilash Nair who have jointly written the tale of Akbar the gangster incite interest for the way they evoke the good old memories of countless films where a dazed boy would silently watch his father die and then spill over his rage, revenge and some nice collection of words in equal measure on the loathed villain who made him an orphan. The feeling of nostalgia is further enhanced by the animated action sequences that appear in the beginning and in the end, bringing back rich memories of cartoons that were watched and loved by generations without fail
Aashiq Abu, aimless and distracted he may be, places his full trust in his script and does his best to enrich it. As though gunshots and action sequences do not suffice, he stages the final revenge act in a place that runs from one narrow maze into another. Akbar is let loose with a knife in his hand. He slits so many throats and spills blood in swift, sharp moves accompanied by deafening swishes. He even incurs deadly blows himself but would come unhurt.
Sekhar Menon, who plays the villain, walks in with wonderful colours, his rooms and his hangouts drenched in red, yellow and rose as though no other colour would enthuse gangsters. Scribe Ahmed shows off his fancy for thriller fiction and films proudly, trying to make up for his patchy writing by being so faithful to the images produced in the so called gangster films, without much effect. The women characters serve the same purpose the villains standing on parapets in the film do, they just appear and disappear, purposes unknown.
Nice movie about a girl dreaming for a home, a gangster dreaming for a home with her and a policeman dreaming to arrest that gangster. The movie ends with a question about difference between good and bad and what is moral and what is not. Who should be punished and who should be not. <br/><br/>Nice movie sparkle with nice songs. Kangana is very good in the movie telling theheart crying tale of her previous life. Imran Hashmi is also promising as a policeman behind gangster (shayani Ahuja) and using whatsoever means he can to arrest him. eyes of shiny Ahuja speaks more than his acting. Nice.
As the name suggests, the film traces the life of a gangster named Akbar who controls the port of Mangalore. The film starts with an animation based prologue capturing the history of Akbar.<br/>The prologue is very impressive which kind of sets the stage for the rest of the movie.<br/>Akbar (Mammootty) is one of the three gangsters who rule Mangalore. They all share a truce by agreeing not to go against the interests of any of them. <br/>Everything is peaceful until Anto(Sekhar Menon of Da Thadiya fame) enters the scene. Loosely based on the character Walter White of Breaking Bad, he is a drug-addict who consumes drugs of his own<br/>preparation. He is also a violent saddist who derives pleasure from inflicting pain.<br/>Tensions flare between Akbar and Anto as Akbar refuses to cooperate with Anto for his new venture of selling contaminated vaccines.<br/>As predicted, Anto attempts to kill Akbar which ends up killing Sana (Nyla Usha), Akbar's wife and leaving Akbar severely injured.<br/>The rest of the story is Akbar's rising from the ashes and exacting revenge on all people responsible for this.<br/>The film has a certain sophistication to it with impressive background score from Deepak. Camera work is excellent and the locations chosen are very apt.<br/>However, the high predictability of the story with absolutely nothing new to offer in terms of story or plot works against the movie.<br/>Although you wont get bored, the film leaves you with a little more to desire. Aashiq Abu tries his best to make the presentation a little more appealing.<br/>The climax is unnecessarily dragged and the film has earned an A certificate for the violence in the climax scene which is quite a bit compared to current Malyalam film standards but not necessarily<br/>too violent per se.<br/>Too many characters remain wasted like Sana and Lily who really do not have any purpose in the movie. The movie entirely rides on the performances of Mammootty and Sekhar who have done an <br/>impressive job as usual. At places one does get reminded of Big B which was one of the finest slick gangster style movies. However, the loose storyline makes you leave with a little dissatisfaction.
