Synopsis
Basing a film in a rural setup and focusing on social issues might get the makers a government subsidy but for the viewers, it’s just old wine in a new bottle.

Is there a dearth of good subjects in the Marathi film industry? We all know there isn’t, but after watching 'Gopya' this is the first question that comes to the mind.

Ever since 'Dhag' fared well at the National Awards a few years ago, umpteen films about young kids from poor backgrounds striving to make it big for their parents’ sakes have released. While trends are alright, the USP of any film is its novelty and none of these can boast of that aspect.

Gopya (Aditya Paithankar) is a crook at heart. The kid can single-handedly tarnish the image of his school and he does it too. But behind his actions is his family’s condition. His father (Sawant) is a drunkard who doesn’t earn much. Gopya’s mother (Juvekar) however, wants her son to complete his education and make a name for himself. But Gopya is not very interested in studies and his school principal (Sabnis) is averse to the idea of conducting sports lessons. But a change of heart ensures that Gopya’s school participates in a sports tournament. This gives the kid a change to show his potential and excel.

Barring the couple of known faces (Sabnis and Juvekar), there’s hardly any effort involved in the performances here. Kamlesh Sawant is reduced to playing a drunkard with miniscule screen presence. Aditya comes across as a sincere chap and for a first-timer, he’s at ease in front of the camera. The rest of the cast is reduced to playing stereotyped characters, which, in turn, make us feel helpless.

Furthermore, basing a film in a rural setup and focusing on social issues might get the makers a government subsidy but for the viewers, it’s just old wine in a new bottle.
