An RJ, IT professional, car showroom head, underworld don and police constable are each dealing with different shades of love. With New Year's Eve around the corner, what will the New Year bring in store for them?
Debut director Pannaga Bharana's Happy New Year is much on the likes of Hollywood romances like Love Actually, Valentine's Day and the lot. It is an anthology film that has five tracks running parallelly. The film is a feel-good entertainer that has many moments when you can feel that warm, fuzzy feeling. The candyfloss entertainer is visually delightful and is complemented with strong performances and good music. Pannaga shows a lot of promise with his debut directorial venture.
The film has five stories, with each of them reflecting different moods of love. Some of the tales seem familiar as they remind you of stories from some of these anthology films from the West, but Pannaga delivers a film that is sincere and entertains both the masses and the seasoned audience. What is notable is that each of the tales has its peak at different times, ensuring taht none of them overpowers the other, giving each of them a different treatment. One smiles, laughs and even feels sad for each of the characters at different times.
Dhananjaya, Rajshri Ponnappa, Saikumar and Diganth have roles that make you instantly like them. On the other hand, the subtle emotions of Sruthi Hariharan, Sudharani, Sonu Gowda and Vijay Raghavendra get you rooting for them at important points of the film. The film has action, romance, comedy and some bittersweet moments, too. The fact that one gets to savour each of the five tales.
The film is definitely worth that summer vacation watch, which you can watch with either your entire family or your special someone. Not too often does one get to see multi-starrers in Sandalwood that do justice to each of the characters in the film, but this film surely sets a new benchmark for that. Go ahead and get entertained.
Kannada cinema is growing leaps and bounds in the recent past with original content. HNY is a movie one of its kind interlacing 5 stories. It is amazing to see how the director has managed to bring it all in little more than 2hrs time. Humor in the movie and the songs fit in really well. It is definitely a family entertainer worth watching!
