: The story follows Dawood, who wishes to don the cop uniform right from his childhood. He grows up to be a straight-laced, passionate policeman, who is sent off to a sleepy border suburb Kollanahalli for his first posting. An unexpected turn of events presents him an opportunity to prove himself.
: If a film name is supposed to give a quick glimpse into what it offers, Sajid Yahiya's debut directorial is bang on both through its expanded, quirky title 'Inspector Dawood Ibrahim' and the shortened version, 'IDI'. Mixing crime, cops and comedy, the film delivers laughs, packs some punch, and has it all to make it a quintessential humour-action flick.
Dawood grows up chasing the dream to be a tough cop. Though often picked for his name and 'how well' it would fit a policeman, he turns out to be a hard-nosed cop, determined to excel in the service. For his first posting, he is sent off to a rustic border village named Kollanahalli and the challenges awaiting him were none like he ever dreamt off.
Right from the beginning, IDI manages to subvert the expectations of audience by bringing in freshness into everything, starting with the credit rolls. With the strong backing of talented child actors, sensible storytelling and music, IDI establishes what being a cop means to Dawood, splendidly. While its lead actor Jayasurya is known for his comedy prowess, it's the rest of the actors who win us over with their wit, expressions and comic timing in this film, as he is busy being the serious action hero. What triggers laughter about him the most is the situations he find himself in.
In the little room that each of the comedy characters get, they have managed to make their presence felt with some entertaining antics. On and off, the film also becomes the gun-blazing action entertainer with some 'don't-undermine-Kerala-Police' and 'dealing-with-a-dreaded-don' style portions, into which humour is smartly weaved in.
The film does get a bit dragging and predictable in its second half, but its overall entertainment quotient can probably help you forgive these minor missteps. Watch IDI, if in the mood for some silly jokes and action that are thoroughly entertaining while they last.
