Incarnate Story: A doctor with the ability to enter the subconscious minds of the possessed must save a young boy from the grips of a powerful demon and settle past scores with the entity.

Incarnate Review: Horror films, especially the ones about exorcism, tend to follow a similar pattern. A strong entity possesses a person. Enter a jaded exorcist who uses either technology, religion or a mix of the two to track and capture the ghost. And finally, what happens to the ghost, forms the storyline. So, when a film like Incarnate steps in, with promises of a different approach to pull out errant ghosts, your curiosity is piqued. Does the film live up to its claims of unique approach? Does it add to and open up more possibilities in the horror genre? Hardly.

Our protagonist is a beat-up, wheelchair-bound scientist Dr Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) with special abilities. He is an 'Incarnate', who can enter the subconscious minds of the possessed and ‘evict’ whichever malignant spirit is at hand. His process, he says, is not religion-based. He uses medical science and his X-Men-like special power along with a dash of Holy Water, so it’s definitely Vatican-supervised.

Hot on the tail of Maggie, a demon that ruined him in the past, Dr Ember tracks down the entity, which has now possessed 12-year-old Cameron (David Mazouz). The problem here is that Maggie has grown extremely powerful and Dr Seth is literally the last line of defense available to the living.

The approach that Incarnate takes to build a unique world with its own set of rules falls flat. There are some comparisons to Inception and The Matrix, but these worlds had a complex set of rules which truly tested the viewers’ intelligence. The world of subconscious here is deceptively simple. There’s no real sense of danger or eeriness that good horror films convey. Salvation comes in the form of strong performances by Aaron Eckhart, the Game Of Thrones actress Carice van Houten, who plays Cameron’s mother, and Matt Nable, who plays the boy’s alcoholic father. Their performances make the human characters far more interesting than the demonic ones.
