Story: Sarvam (Srinivas Reddy) is desperate to get a transferred back to his home town Kareem Nagar. He thinks his colleague Rani (Poorna) is his lucky for him and begins to woo her in the hope that she will help him get the transfer. And thus begins a hilarious pursuit of happiness.
Movie Review: Jayammu Nischayammu Raa defines the idea of a feel-good movie. While the genre has lately been dominated by urban dramas – in the small film category at least – going the small town way worked wonders with the story that the director intended to narrate. Debutant Shiva Raj Kanumuri proved that a film with good content can be as entertaining as the potboilers.
Any obsolete standards that the industry has set for ‘how a hero ought to look/be’ have been successfully shattered by Srinivas Reddy in this film. Sarvam is a typical small town guy, without any heroic pretences – a typical mamma’s boy, he is always dressed in formals, wears a bottu on his forehead and consults his godman for everything. We’ve all seen Srinivas Reddy play the over-expressive friend of the hero. His rendition of the character is as natural as it could get, while delivering the promised comic relief. The transition in body language that he shows after Sarvam changes his perspective in life is flawless.
Then there is Rani whose only goal in life is to start her own nursery. When Sarvam wins a small lottery when she passes by, he is convinced that Rani is lucky for him and begins to woo her. The romance in the film has an endearing small town flavour to it. Sarvam’s idea of wooing Rani is to make her laugh. How Sarvam woos Rani and help her realise her dream while he gets to go back to his hometown is what forms the crux of the movie.
Poorna playing the uncomplicated small town girl works perfectly for the role. How the filmmaker used posters of Attarintiki Daaredi – right from ‘coming soon’ to ‘successful 10th week’ – to establish the timeline of the story makes for an impressive screenplay strategy.
The subtle and undramatic acknowledgements to the treatment of the girl child in a middle class home, the very real portrayal of workplace harassment and abuse of power weaved seamlessly with the heartwarming love story certainly struck a chord. And the music only elevates the entire feel of the film. There are no villains in this movie – only characters responding to situations, their weaknesses and strengths. Comedy too flows naturally in the narrative. Barring the lagged preclimax, the movie keeps you engaged throughout.
Jayammu Nischayammu Raa makes you root for the underdog, empathise for Sarvam and makes you want to believe that ‘good conquers evil’. If you have been looking for a good weekend watch with the family, this is it.
