The not-so-idyllic hamlet of Kiragooru has everyone living in unison, albeit with the odd fights and surprises. What happens when the cunning administrators want to play the caste politics card to divide them? D Suman Kittur's most ambitious project till date is also her best work so far.

This adaptation of Poornachandra Tejaswi's short stories is the best tribute anyone could have given to the writer and his body of work. The film is rustic yet colourful, with characters that stand out. The film follows the covert fight between the greed in the minds of certain village authorities and the easily wavering minds of the menfolk in the village, with the rowdy women of Kiragooru having an equally important role to play. The real hero of the film is Suman, for her narrative and adaptation transports you to this make-believe hamlet of Kiragooru. She has cleverly woven the characters and happenings and extracted the best out of everyone. She is ably supported by cinematographer Manohar Joshi and composer Sadhu Kokila, for the camera work and background score lift the story to a different level.

When it comes to performances, Shwetha Srivatsav easily stands taller than the rest, for she delivers strongly in an author-backed role. Sukratha Wagle is the other revelation in the film. Manasa Joshi has yet another prized performance, while Sonu Gowda's silent act differentiates her from the rest of the rowdy women. The ensemble, that includes Kishore, Karunya, Sundar, Rahul Madhav, Yogi and more are all aptly cast and do justice to their roles. The only drawback is that there are many expletives that are muted in the film. One wonders whether it would have made sense for the makers to have taken an A certificate without the muting. That apart, this is probably one of the best literary adaptations in Sandalwood in a long time and is surely going to remembered as a classic in the years to come.
