Synopsis
Koothara boasts of a daring title and none of the female characters linger, they appear and disappear like bubbles. It cannot be called an enjoyable movie despite a rich verve of youthful energy that is pumped into it.

Story : The film chronicles the lives of three youths who are firm on their dreams despite being pushed aside by adverse turn of events in their life.

Review : Koothara is part sense and part absurdity. Srinath has a pretty simple tale - men going through mess and mayhem finally turn adversity into advantage. He sets the story in a college backed by a narration, the source of which would be revealed only in the end and it is also one of those factors that contribute to the lazy sense of insanity that pervades the film.

Three engineering students played by Sunny Wayne, Tovino Thomas, Bharath find themselves dismissed from college after a series of antics. While staging these sequences Srinath is almost unabashed stitching together scenes which dangle between extreme madness and shameful silliness.

In this film, the girls emerge as the canniest betrayers and flirtatious witches who heartlessly treat men like tissue papers. A girl would egg on her lover on stage and behind the screen she finds herself passionately pressed onto a wall, her body wriggling in the arms of another chap. Break-ups happen with the accompaniment of the most shameless acts, like a boy hurling a lingerie at his lover declaring that it is a sign of divorce.

The narrative revels in such utmost acts of shamelessness. Mohanlal enters with the most fanciful garbs and visage he had worn in recent times. A patchy, overgrown beard blankets a darkened face and right from his name to his words and deeds, this character is etched in mystery, a ploy that doesn't work to full effect.

It falters because of confusion or an uncertainty regarding the true motives of the character; whether he should be a bitter soul with devilish cunning or someone with a godly aura who leaves behind nothing but mystery and virtues. Lal does his best to enthuse, but the lack of depth in his character results in his undoing.

Koothara boasts of a daring title and none of the female characters linger, they appear and disappear like bubbles. It cannot be called an enjoyable movie despite a rich verve of youthful energy that is pumped into it. Often it is low, degrading and utterly disappointing rarely eliciting any real laughter.
