If you have the will and the desire to bring about change, then that is all it takes. Kumari Gangubai Non-Matric proves this in her inimitable humourous style.
The TV serial by the same name was a great hit, which is why expectations of Kumari Gangubai Non-Matric, the movie were high. The plumpy, cute and forthright Gangubai (Nirmiti Sawant), along with Chhu (Paddy Kamble), who fights social ills with her will and humour had endeared herself to the Marathi audiences. However, director Rajesh Deshpande, while making sure that he uses not one but two Nirmiti Sawants to keep the humour quotient alive, slackens on the script and its pace.
The story revolves around a politician played by Nagesh Bhosle, who wants power at any cost. Gangubai, who is fighting for the rights of people in her village meets him and he decides to use her as a pawn in his quest for power, since Gangubai is an exact replica of the CM's wife, Achala.
The exchange of the ladies takes place and Gangubai begins playacting Achala to the T. It's soon election time and Achala gets a ticket and wins. It's from here that the story takes off and Achala aka Gangubai aka in her style wins over villagers with her style of working even as she exposes the corrupt politicians!
This is the part of the movie that could have been textured with humour and confusion is sadly, rather hurried. And the first part that builds this situation up is tediously tardy and often uses OTT comedy.
Where the movie succeeds partially is because of Nirmiti's performance and some of the dialogues that take on the political establishment in a refreshingly, unabashed manner. When you hear such dialogues, you wish there were more of these punches! When Gangubai solves a problem, you wish there were more examples.
Given the current, corrupt political scenario in the country, such problem solving acts would be lapped up by the audiences. However, the film leaves you wishing for more and that's where its problem lies.
