Karthik (Jayan), who comes from Trichy to Chennai to avoid a problem, falls in love at first sight with Pooja (Gayathri). But she doesn't reciprocate his love despite the approval of her family. What is the mystery behind her silence?
There is a strong whiff of the romantic films of the late 90s in
. It is about a young man who falls in love at first sight with a girl who does him a favour. It is a romance where it is not family but the lovers themselves who are the hurdles. It is also a film that goes by the logic of three fights and five songs, just because that is how it should be. There are even separate songs for the hero and the heroine to set up their characters. These should not have been problematic, only familiar, if the scenes were interesting but that is not the case as the film makes for a tiring watch.
For one, Nagaraj takes almost the entire first half to set up his story. He wastes precious 25 minutes just to establish that Karthik is moving to Chennai on account of a clash with few rowdies. In fact, the first 45 minutes are very much similar to Lingusamy's
where Madhavan moves from Trichy to Chennai and falls in love with Meera Jasmine on his first day in the city. And that film, which released a decade ago, took half the time of this one to get the story going!
The reason behind Pooja refusing to accept Karthik's love is a little tame (even Karthik says so at one point). She was taken to the police station after her male friends tried to date rape her and her mom (Geetha) blamed her for the fiasco. So, she has decided never to marry just to prove to her mother that she was blameless! But bafflingly, she continues to stick to her stand even after her mom has come to realize her virtuousness and wants her to marry Karthik.
What makes this protracted film just that bit bearable are the supporting actors who makes us relate to the characters. As for the leads, Gayathri seems to have taken being expressionless for expressing sadness while debutant Jayan tries to pass off as part-Vishal and part-Karthi.
