Synopsis
The film, which is about an unlikely couple and lure of money, is not logically perfect but it sure brings out the slapstick comedian in Fahad, hitherto untapped.

Story : Santhosh Nair's Money Ratnam centres on the lure of money or more specifically how a bagful of money changes a person's life overnight.

Review : Neil John Samuel (Fahadh) is a salesperson at a luxury car showroom who is about to propose to his girlfriend Pia (Niveda Thomas), a social worker. Neil gets trapped in a barroom brawl, and a series of events ensues after which he ends up with a bag containing Rs 1 crore in a remote town in Tamil Nadu.

At the same time, a group of local fraudsters are trying to sell a precious stone to a millionaire and the stories connect at the end in the span of a day, like in similar films in the recent past. The various people that Neil comes across - those in need of money and others who swear by greed - on his journey to Kochi are supposed to change his attitude towards money and life in general. But more than the message, which is somewhat shaky, what lingers is the humour.

The film, which is about an unlikely couple and lure of money, is not logically perfect but it sure brings out the slapstick comedian in Fahad, hitherto untapped. The actor proves his ability to carry off an entire sequence sans dialogues with perfect ease, something akin to Chaplin's antics. In fact, you feel there are few actors in Malayalam who are as uninhibited as Fahadh. The group of fraudsters have been played convincingly. Renji Panicker and Sunil Sugadha easily slip into their roles. However, the film lags at certain points, especially the fight sequences with Tamil goons and the eloping couple rescue missions.

Logic takes a backseat when a car showroom salesman manages to knock down experiences thugs one after the other. The song seems incongruous though visually appealing and certain questions remain unanswered at the end. On the whole, the director shows good promise and the film is worth a watch, solely for the humour. - Asha Prakash
