Times of India
Heartbroken and jobless youngsters seem to be the flavour of the season in the Marathi industry. In the past, Marathi films have by and large dealt with farmer suicides and succeeded at bringing out the nuances of the issue.
So there really remains little scope for the same topic to be showed from a different perspective. Yet, Nivdung attempts to do just that.
An aspiring singer, Keshav (Pradhan), is trying his best to make a mark in the field but despite numerous attempts, success is a distant dream. His live-in partner Manasi (Sara Shrawan) is fed up with Keshav and opts out of the relationship, leaving Keshav heartbroken. When he confides in a friend that he feels like ending his life, the friend sarcastically tells him that that he should become a part of a farmer's family and then end his life. Why? Well, at least that way, the family will get some monetary compensation and Keshav will die doing a good deed. Turns out, Keshav takes this 'suggestion' very seriously. But does he really do what he plans to?
If you've thrown up your hands in exasperation after reading the story development, we don't blame you. After all, which friend gives such brilliant advice and which sane person actually takes it? But then, Nivdung is not about logic, is it? The rest of the film is standard stuff; drought-stricken farmers, cunning landlord, debts and yes, love.
Bhushan seriously needs to choose better movies. It would be a shame if his potential goes waste due to bad choices. Sanskruti does the standard village bimbette stuff although her role has scope for other things. Shekhar Phadke's landlord act is laughable.
A friendly advice; stay away unless you have nothing else to watch.
