The Illusionists (four Horsemen) resurface to expose the unethical practices of a tech magnate but find themselves in a tough spot instead. Their cover is blown and intentions defamed. Caught on the wrong side of the law, they are on the run as the joke is on them. Who's pulling the strings and why?
They soon discover that the man who has maligned them and has them trapped in Macau is Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), a tech prodigy who aims to use them for his own benefit. They must find a way to take him down and clear their name. Meanwhile, Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo), is on his own pursuit of truth, hoping to avenge his father's death.
While the first film was an entertaining thriller on puzzling magic tricks and quick chases, this one is more of an emotional saga, replete with infinite twists, hectic plot and talkative characters. A few smart action scenes do pique your interest but too many people have too many hidden motives. This entanglement adds to the thrill but takes the magic out of the story. After a point, you stop caring about who is who and why are they chasing so and so and how do they do it?
Speaking of actors, Jesse Eisenberg is on auto mode, reprising his fast-talking, shrewd character for the umpteenth time. (Mark Zuckerberg forever). Woody Harrelson is quirky and Dave Franco gets more screen space in this one than the previous film. Morgan Freeman is back as Dylan's frenemy who 'knows it all'. Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan are the new additions to the original cast and both are decent if not memorable. The stunt in the climax in particular manages to impress as well.
If you are a fan of fast-paced heist thrillers, this one's watchable if not as entertaining as the prequel.
Lizzy Caplan replaced Isla Fisher in the second part due to Fisher's pregnancy.
The movie was originally titled 'Now You See Me: The Second Act'
Now You See Me 2 will be the sixth time Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine appear in the same project.
