A sudden twist in the end makes the film worth a watch. But then, it is too long a wait.

Don't confuse it for a Bengali version of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai . Because it is not! Nevertheless, there is one similarity here. This one, too, is about a deadly local gangster, Arjan (Om), who doesn't think twice before killing people or chopping off their ears if they dare defy his instructions. But when it comes to his wife, he is a different man altogether. He adores her, worships her like a goddess. Sreelekha (Ritabhari) does her duties of a wife, but doesn't love him. She puts up with her husband, who provides her security. She simply can't accept the differences in their cultural, educational and social backgrounds.

Now, there's a parallel track as well, which revolves around two rather interesting characters — Sayan (Ronnie Chakraborty) and Puja (Nimisha Dey Sarkar). These two aspiring models — also live-in-partners — dream to make it big some day and work as escorts to earn extra bucks. However, on principle, they do not discuss their professional lives with each other. Things run smoothly till one day, Sayan accidentally bumps into Sreelekha. He tries to woo her with his charm only to fleece money. Meanwhile, Arjan happens to meet Puja and they become very good friends. The story takes a turn thereafter.

Lead actress Ritabhari gives a natural performance and convincingly showcases the grey side to her character. Om, on the other hand, seems camera-conscious. Anindya Banerjee as Baptu, Arjan's side-kick, does a good job. Ronnie and Nimisha do justice to their roles. Rajatava and Debdut, in guest appearances, leave a mark.
Considering it's a gangster film, which dwells on struggle for power, Once Upon A Time In Kolkata thrives more on the emotional quotient than on-screen violence. There's hardly any heavy-duty dialogue that one can recall.

Overall, the production quality fails to impress. The first half is a tad boring. Surprisingly, the film gathers momentum in the second half, wherein the director draws inspiration from Shakespeare's Macbeth .
A sudden twist in the end makes the film worth a watch. But then, it is too long a wait.
