: Nandan Menon (Vijay Babu) and wife (Parvathy Nair) are settled in Bengaluru. However, situations force Nandan to resign his job head back to Kochi with his family. There are also hints that the new managing director and Nandan are not in good terms.
The movie begins with a Benz car halting at a signal. A biker starts honking though it's a red signal and tries to overtake the car, leaving scratches in the process. The event has a bearing on the overall scheme of things that follow.
The movie picks up pace during the family's journey to Kochi from Bengaluru, where they encounter a tanker truck that doesn't allow them to it. Soon it becomes obvious that the truck driver is toying their lives. Even they manage to overtake it, the driver menacingly shadows them attempting to kill them at every turn.
The film flings a mind-boggling number of of questions at the viewer - the relevant ones being who the driver is and what is his motive and why the bystanders spotted they never say a massive truck following the family's car. While there are subtle hints along the road and the driver's identity is a surprise reveal, the audience gets lost in the narrative, which deals with the chase for over an hour and 40 minutes.
Compared to Hollywood road movies such as Steven Spielberg's Duel or Bollywood films such as Navdeep Singh's NH 10 and Ramgopal Varma's Road, Overtake doesn't even come close.
The positives though are that the movie has a few thrilling scenes and no unnecessary sub plots. It's wrapped up within a couple hours, and also features some good rustic locales captured through aerial shots. Overtake is a different attempt but doesn't pack the power to race ahead.
This should have been a 30 minutes short movie or should have been made 15 years ago. Waste of time, and money
When you assemble an amateur team to recreate a Spielberg movie in Malayalam, the result is this!! We need to turn to our roots and have original movies. Direction, screen play and dialogues were below average.
