: Bikini Bottom is turned into a post-apocalyptic nightmare and its dwellers run amok when the secret recipe for their beloved Krabby Patties is stolen. SpongeBob (Kenny) forms an unlikely team with Plankton to recover the recipe, restore Bikini Bottom to normalcy and sate the appetites of its ravenous dwellers.
: If there are two words that best describe this often surreal serving of a movie, those would be - playfully deranged. All of Bikini Bottom is hooked on to whatever it is that comprises the stolen Krabby Patty's secret formula. Everyone thinks the thief is Plankton, who has a history of having his one (and only) eye on the formula. But SpongeBob teaches Plankton the importance of working together to achieve their common goal. After a few hits and misses, however, they get their friends Patrick (Fagerbakke), Mr Krabs (Brown), Squidward (Bumpass) and Sandy (Carolyn Lawrence) involved.
The biggest surprise is however, Antonio Banderas' live action pirate sequences as Captain BurgerBeard. They are a riot. Rather, bonkers would be the right word. Where else would you see a bearded pirate who is also the writer of a magical destiny re-creating book, beach his 'boat' (which is actually a food truck), on land and proceed to grill up a storm? Particularly surreal is the time travel sequence where SpongeBob and Plankton meet an intergalactic dolphin named Bubbles (Berry) who is quite literally described as a guardian of the galaxy. Bubbles takes a bathroom break and entrusts his job to SpongeBob for a few minutes, with disastrous results.
Clearly, the screenwriters were having a ball as the film is full of unexplained randomness, like SpongeBob and friends morphing into superheroes. It all works, more so because of the tight editing and economical run-time. Kids might not necessarily get the message about pooling in resources to solve a big problem but then you don't watch SpongeBob for social messages. We could have done without 3D, for it seems wholly unnecessary. The best way to enjoy this one is to just sit back and enjoy the crazy ride.
The film is dedicated in the memory of Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012), who voiced Mermaid Man in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999).
The SpongeBob also features music sung by the actors themselves, just like it's prequel.
Banderas voiced the character in the theatrically released films whilst Bauza voiced the character in The Adventures of Puss in Boots series.
Hollywood actors Antonio Banderas and Eric Bauza are in the film and they play Captain Burgerbeard and one of the seagulls respectively. Both the actors have given voiceovers for the character of Puss in Boots in separate Dreamworks Productions.
This is the first Nickelodeon film to get a sequel that is not based on Rugrats (1991).
The film was originally slated for a 2014 release.
Like its predecessor, the film will have live-action footage.
This sequel was announced almost ten years after the 2004 film 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'.
BurgerBeard is a pirate who makes his way to a remote island in the South Pacific called Bikini Atoll (which was in real life the location for the testing of a massive Hydrogen bomb called Castle Bravo) to get his hands on a magical book that can turn anything written on it, into reality. The book itself has the story of SpongeBob SquarePants, the simple-minded, innocent and sweet sea sponge who enjoys his day job as a fry cook at Krusty Krab, the fast food restaurant which serves up the legendary Krabby Patty. SpongeBob also zealously guards the secret formula from Plankton, who plans to steal it and control all of Bikini Bottom. Plankton is also the owner of the Chum Bucket, another restaurant, and therefore, a rival to Mr. Krabs, who SpongeBob works for.
Meanwhile in Bikini Bottom, Plankton attacks Krusty Krab and by using a combination of guile and feigned surrender, distraction and a decoy, gains access to Krabs' vault that contains the Krabby Patty secret recipe. Plankton almost makes away with the prized recipe but it stopped by SpongeBob in the nick of time. Just when the two are struggling for the recipe, it vanishes for reasons unknown to them.
Without the secret recipe, Bikini Bottom's residents are in a state of shock and anguish. They are left nothing less than dazed and confused for so long, it's not true. SpongeBob is also can't make more Krabby Patties and is heartbroken to see his homeland overrun by violence and chaos. Everyone is ravenous, not least of all. However, SpongeBob knows that Plankton did not really steal the formula. Therefore, when Bikini Bottom's redidents try to sacrifice them to the gods to appease the gods, SpongeBob rescues Plankton just as he is about to be tortured, by taking him away inside a giant soap bubble. After they fly away and land in a safe area, SpongeBob says that he and Plankton should team up to get the formula back. He sings a song to show Plankton the meaning of teamwork, but Plankton doesn't know the meaning of it.
Plankton does come around however, and the two head back to the former's restaurant, the Chum Bucket to rescue Karen, Plankton's computer wife, to use as a power source for a time machine that will take them to the moment before the formula disappeared. They assemble the machine at an abandoned taco restaurant in between breaks and mouthfuls of tacos, and head out to various points in the future. At one place, they meet Bubbles, an intergalactic dolphin whose job it is to 'watch' [meaning: protect] the cosmos. By travelling to the right point in the past, they eventually succeed in retrieving the formula, but it turns out to be the fake Plankton had left. BurgerBeard's seagull friends had torn off the final page of the book and rewritten the story [being unsatisfied with his own abrupt ending of the story] so that he gets the formula, turns his ship into a food truck and sells Krabby Patties at a beach named Salty Shoals.
Meanwhile, the final torn-off page falls into the ocean and Sandy Cheeks, SpongeBob's friend who is a squirrel living underwater, finds it. Driven nuts by the lack of Krabby Patties, Sandy thinks the page is a sign from the 'sandwich gods' and takes it and suggests a sacrifice be made to appease them. The Bikini Bottom residents try to sacrifice SpongeBob, and the latter gamely volunteers to be sacrificed but in the nick of time, he and Mr Krabs [who is poised and ready to sacrifice him] get the aroma of Krabby Patties, and thw two of them along with the lynch mob follow the aroma which leads to the surface. Bubbles the intergalactic dolphin suddenly reappears via a rift in spacetime and helps them get to land by blowing them out through his blowhole. Bubbles had been sacked from his job after he took a brief bathroom break and handed his task to SpongeBob who failed in doing so. Bubbles said he owed SpongeBob a thank you as he hated his job as overseer of the cosmos. He allows Mr. Krabs, Squidward and Sandy the ability to breathe on land. Plankton joins also, stowed away in SpongeBob's sock.
The team locates Burger-Beard who, using the book, banishes them to Pelican Island. Using Squidward's squid ink and the last page, SpongeBob writes them a chapter, transforming all of them into superheroes with special powers - The Invincibubble (SpongeBob), Mr. Superawesomeness (Patrick), Sour Note (Squidward), The Rodent (Sandy), and Sir Pinch-a-Lot (Mr. Krabs). They return to Salty Shoals and take on BurgerBeard. But just as BurgerBeard is getting the upper hand, Plankton, who'd been left on Pelican Island, returns as a super muscle-bound hero named Plank-Ton and comes to help them. After retrieving the formula, Plank-Ton and Invincibubble work together to create one final attack that sends BurgerBeard all the way to Bikini Atoll. Plankton now knows the value of teamwork and returns the secret formula to Mr. Krabs and the gang uses the final page's magic to return home to Bikini Bottom.
