The son of a late veteran politician, C P Swathanthran's life with his half-witted friends in Kokrankara village is a comedy of errors. He has a long-time crush on young activist Umadevi. Urged by his companions, Swathanthran decides to stage a protest before the secretariat demanding that his dad's statue be placed before the village panchayat office, and the episode turns into a transformative phase in his life.
Mammootty has played quite a few characters that long for an image makeover and take up silly promotional ventures for the same. Does Azhakiya Ravanan and Pranchiyettan ring a bell? Utopyayile Rajavu can be added to the list.
That said, the film is assuredly funny, preachy in parts, and is refreshingly set in the backdrop of a village, at a time when our films teem with urban narratives.
The story takes us for a light-hearted sojourn into an archetypal hamlet named Kokrankara, with its share of assorted, textured characters.
C P Swathanthran, the son of a late politician, often ends up dancing to the half-baked plans of his senseless well-wishers. A character all of us may have come across at least once, he has a soft corner for Uma Devi, an activist from the village. The film tells the tale of how their paths cross and how his life is transformed.
The character-driven movie doesn't have a strong plot. Nevertheless, Swathanthran's efforts to create a strong public image, backed by his companions, provide enough fodder for humour.
Similarly, the use of experimental elements like birds and statues as narrators, and smart rejoinders have added to the film's entertainment prowess.
Measured performances by Mammootty, Jewel Mary and other lead actors do much to energize their roles. The film's a tad too lengthy and the story progression quite predictable at certain points, nevertheless, the director has pepped them up with a clever line or two.
Notwithstanding its flaws, Utopyayile Rajavu is worth a visit, for its nifty fun and entertaining concept.
