Synopsis
This story is far too simplistic, the characters unevenly explained and too many corners are cut. Simply put, you’ll watch it if you’re big fan of Efron or Ratajkowski.

Story: Cole Carter aspires to become a famous DJ on the global circuit. His loyal posse consists of Mason (Weston), Ollie (Fernandez) and Squirrel (Shaffer). Currently though, Cole is limited to doing free gigs and when paid, earns a pittance. Things change when he accosts James Reed (Bentley) who becomes his mentor. But apart from Reed's talent, Cole also admires the latter's girlfriend Sophie (Ratajkowski).

Review: Let's start with what We Are Your Friends is not about, rather than what it is about. Despite slick visuals and stylish montages, this is not a go-to guide on how to become a star deejay. This story is far too simplistic, the characters unevenly explained and too many corners are cut.

It really is more about our protagonist, Cole, feeling torn between loyalties towards his old buddies versus his own irrepressible ambitions for stage stardom. But Cole must conquer Hollywood's party circuit before he can hope to be a globetrotting, headlining act like James Reed, who he meets outside a nightclub one night.

Reed tells Cole to embrace originality, shun imitation and use 'real' sound samples in his music. Then there's Reed's ridiculously sexy girlfriend/PA Sophie who hip-sways in and out of scenes. Reed's sometimes brusque behavior with her is a very predictable setup for some steamy-but-surreptitious-sex between young protege and PA. She promptly falls for Cole. The latter's lascivious, longing looks at her bosom and behind also openly telegraphs what will happen between them.

Romance subplot aside though, we see that Reed clearly has some past issue. This, or the reason behind his fame, is never explained. Surprising, as Reed and Cole are pole characters. Cole learns his lessons but a little grittiness interspersed with the neon party lights and techno flash would've made things more interesting. Simply put, you'll watch it if you're big fan of Efron or Ratajkowski.
