Yaakkai Synopsis: The chairman of a multi-specialty hospital dies mysterious and the cop investigating it thinks it could be the chairman’s son. But more bodies are discovered and puzzle him. Who is behind these murders and why?
Yaakkai Review: The opening scene of Yaakkai is so full of mood — dark, mysterious and striking. We see a mysterious figure get out of a car on top of a multi-storeyed parking lot, and the car toppling over to the ground. We perk up and hope we are in for a forceful mystery thriller, much like Dhurvangal Pathinaaru. But what follows next is a disappointing film that cannot decide if it wants to be a procedural or a romance. Instead of juicy suspense, the director chooses frivolous romance.
The action cuts to Kathir (Kreshna, who plays this character like a man-child and tests our patience), a college student who is head over heels in love with his college mate Kavitha (Swathi, pleasing but nothing else). Kavitha is the kind of angelic figure who we see only in our films. She donates blood, is friendly with speech and hearing impaired kids and is always with a smile. Now and then, Velappan decides to give us what is happening with Sahayam (Prakash Raj, solid), the cop who is investigating the hospital chairman’s death. He is somewhat certain that the chairman’s son, Sriram (Guru Somasundaram, who is surprisingly bland), has something to do with this. And Sriram does have skeletons in his closet.
This parallel narration does somewhat keep us hooked for a while, but we are soon able to guess who is committing the murders and our interest wanes. It doesn’t help that we start predicting the scenes that follow after that. And the Kathir-Kavitha relationship keeps getting sillier and sillier. In the end, the effort to make the romance something divine (like the one in Ghajini) doesn’t move us one bit.
