Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt took forward their fun-loving chemistry from Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania to their latest outing Badrinath Ki Dulhania. And, the love of the audiences reflected in its box office collections which crossed INR 100 crore mark in just 13 days of its release. However, a depicted molestation scene in the film has irked a large section of critics and audiences who called it a failed attempt in the wake of gender inequality and feminism.

The molestation scene

The molestation scene
There was a particular scene where Varun's character is being molested by a group of men on the streets who is later rescued by Alia and his friends. While Varun is shocked and emotionally broken after the incident, instead of comforting and supporting him, Alia and his friends laugh at him watching his torn clothes. Many people on the social media expressed their anger over its picturization who questioned the filmmaker, would his friends reacted in the same way if the same thing would've happened with Alia's character. However, Varun thinks that the scene was supposed to be funny and meant to portray how Badri’s male ego is shattered.

Varun Dhawan speaks

Varun Dhawan speaks
“Out of 10, if two don’t like something, that doesn’t count as mass opinion. People who felt that way are entitled to their opinion, it’s totally fine with me. It was supposed to be a funny scene and meant to portray how Badri’s male ego is shattered. In 3 Idiots, there’s a scene where a character confuses a Hindi word for ‘balatkar’ (rape). People should have been offended by that as well. We didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s sentiments and if we did so unknowingly, we apologise,” Varun told Mumbai Mirror.

Varun Dhawan on nepotism in Bollywood
Speaking about nepotism in the Hindi film industry, Varun said, “I definitely think if you’re born into the industry you get easier access but that’s about it. I have never denied that, but after that, only talent and hard work sustains you. Nobody is ready to burn money just because you have a filmi lineage. Superstars in every era have come from outside the industry and that will continue to happen because cinema is nobody’s birthright.”
