In our country, Bollywood is no less than a religion and every little thing becomes a talking point, be it a statement or a movie. While 2017 had both hit and flop films which kept everybody talking, here were some of the most talked about controversies this past year:
The Nepotism Debate
The biggest word to rock 2017 was nepotism and the one who started it all was Kangana Ranaut. Appearing on Koffee With Karan, Kangana branded host Karan Johar as the flagbearer of nepotism. While they played it cool, soon after, Karan said he felt the comment was uncalled for. What followed was a lot of celebrities taking unnecessary sides. Months later, at the IIFA Awards, Karan, Varun Dhawan and Saif Ali Khan poked fun at Kangana and her comments which was severely criticized. Finally, the debate ended when Varun apologised, Saif issued a very 'technical' statement and Karan said he was done with the word 'nepotism'.
Mira Rajput's puppy remark
On Womens Day, Shahid Kapoor's wife Mira was invited to the stage to share her views on motherhood. She made a remark where she compared her daughter Misha to a puppy and pointed fingers at working mothers. Of course, this didn't go down too well with thousands writing open letters to Mira and her brand of motherhood. The controversy took some time to settle and now, she regrets saying what she said.
The Azaan controversy
When Sonu Nigam sent out a tweet about being disturbed by the azaan, little did he know he would end up inviting a lot of ire. There was a bounty put on his head and after a lot of declarations, Sonu Nigam himself shaved his head.
Lipstick Under My Burkha
Alankrita Bose's movie Lipstick Under My Burkha wasn't and easy pass. The movie was called too lady oriented and demeaning and was denied certification by then censor chief Pahlaj Nihalani. Later, the Film Appellate Board stepped in and the movie was allowed to release. The publicity and the campaigns clearly worked for the film which made good returns at the box office.
Mahira Khan and Ranbir Kapoor caught smoking
In late September, Ranbir Kapoor was caught having a smoke with Pakistani actress Mahira Khan in New York. Naturally, the actress was shamed to no extent for the way she dressed and the smoking habits. While at first the two chose not to clarify, Ranbir later said that Mahira being shamed was very unfortunate and it was just a casual meeting between two friends. There were many who tried to link the two stars together.
The Hrithik Roshan-Kangana Ranaut Affair
2017 was clearly not a good year for Kangana. Her movies flopped and her personal life had become the centre of attention. While the two stars may have dated in the past, Kangana and her 'silly ex' went on to slap legal notices on each other with their families getting involved. A lot of letters, email threads and exclusive interviews became public which makes the affair one of the ugliest scandals to hit Bollywood in recent years.
Padmavati, from the start invited a lot of trouble. From the shoot to the songs, it faced criticism to no end. The film which was supposed to release on 1st December has been stalled. The film was said to hurt Rajput sentiments and portraying history inaccurately. As per latest reports, the film's title has been changed to 'Padmavat' by the Censor Board.
